Supercharger Kits - How They Work

Stock Superchargers by new car manufacturers

Superchargers also called Blowers are a performance system that can be added to most any automotive car or truck. Supercharged cars can be purchase directly from the car companies in many performance product lines like Ford Mustang, Chevy Corvette, Cadillac CTS-V, Audi S4, and Camaro ZL1. Some of these models offer base level cars with lower performance (no supercharger) all the way up to special editions or their top performance level vehicles lately showing impressive muscle with superchargers. The Eaton supercharger is the model used by OEM models like Cadillac CTS-V and ZR1 Corvette. Eaton has been around a long time and some Thunderbirds and XR7 Cougars in the late 80's had roots style blowers on 3.8L V6 engines.

An OEM supercharger example and one of the top performers on the market today is found on the 2012 ZR1 Corvette. The Corvette ZR1 uses a 6.2L LS9 V8 aluminum block, heads, etc and cranks out a whopping 638 HP with a top speed of 205 mph on a test track. The 4-lobe Eaton Twin-vortices series supercharger sits a-top the LS9 engine and breaths 604 pound feet torque at an impressive 3800 rpm. The torque is pretty awesome over the entire power band.  Not only does it have a supercharger intercooler, but houses a dry sump oil system, titanium valves and connecting rods. The ZR1 is one serious machine you can buy and is capable to use as a daily driver yet you can take it to the track and spend the day making laps at speeds that only your own limitations (and wings) will prevent you from taking flight. The Shelby Mustang GT500 uses a 5.4L V8 engine with a roots style supercharger nested under the bulging hood makes 550 hp turns 4.1 zero to sixty and 12.4 ¼ mile times. Not bad for a nose heaver pony car. The Shelby Super Snake is available up to 800 hp by adding other performance enhancements and boost. These are just a few examples of ready to go performance if you have the deep pockets to buy off the showroom floor.

Aftermarket Mustang Superchargers, Corvette Superchargers and other OEM

Similar supercharger kits are available aftermarket to add to any Mustang so you don’t need to buy a Shelby to get a supercharger with the superchargers performance. Both Vortech supercharger and Edelbrock supercharger kits are available for the Corvette and Mustang models. Choosing the right kit for your Mustang, Camaro or Corvette is up to what performance requirements you want and they type of budget you have available. For example a 2010 – 2012 Camaro supercharger kits from Vortech are available in horsepower boosts of 625 hp or 1200 hp. The Ford GT Supercar from 2005 – 2006 used a Lysholm supercharger twin screw unit but other aftermarket upgrade kits are available like the Whipple supercharger 4.0L polished or black that puts out 3+ pounds more boost over the stock 3.3L unit using the same pulley ratio. Many other supercharger makers like Paxton Supercharger, Whipple Supercharger, Lysholm supercharger, Procharger, Kenne Bell, Weiand superchargers. Each supercharger company tends to specialize in kits for specific car models with some crossover between Paxton, Edelbrock and Vortech for cars like Mustang, Corvette, Camaro and SRT models.
